Can there be Peace without Gun Control?

The thing that bothers me most about Iraq is the fact that America has not tried to reduce the number of weapons on the street. In fact it would seem like the amount of weapons has steadily increased during our presence.

I was watching a documentary on Lime TV the other day. A boy had pulled a gun at a Petrol fueling station. When questioned he said it was his uncle's gun which was licensed by the United States. Before he was questioned the boy asked incredulously "Are you the government?". It was as much a plea for some form of official order as it was a challenge to the Iraqi police officers.

Today in Vermont a man picked up a gun and hunted for his girlfriend. He couldn't find her so he shot her mother, coworkers, and friends and then himself. There was no peace in that town in Vermont today and there is no peace on the streets of Baghdad. What is there? Readily available guns. You do the math.

Re: Gun Control? hold that thought (none / 0)

There are many, many states and jurisdictions in the United States where harping on this as if there were universal agreement among Democrats that the Second Amendment should be repealed is part of the kiss of death that keeps us out of power.

I certainly live in one. In my congressional District, many businesses don't even bother to open at all, on the first day of deer season, because neither the employees nor customers are going to show up anyway. Schools close. Yes, you read that right. Schools close.

In Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Colorado we have important campaigns on the line.  The Western States Strategy is doomed, if gun control gets stapled back onto the flyers.

Chill. There's no party unity on this point, and it polarizes one-issue voters, some of whom are just starting to come around when they hear a candidate like Paul Hackett run for Congress and gun control isn't one of his platform planks.

We all have our manias, but it's not helpful to try to plaster them all on the national bandwagon, sometimes. One of our memes for 2006 and 2008 is going to be that Republicans no longer respect the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  Waving banners for gun control clutters that up.

Do what you want, of course, but think about that.

I know and I thought twice about posting it but I am sick and tired of burrying the things I feel passionately about just to make it easier on the Democrats.

Sorry, gun control is important....the lives of those lost are important.  The barrage of insults hurled from brainwashed republicons are not important.

Re: Gun Control? hold that thought (none / 0)

This issue is very complicated. One obvious thing that should be done is is to insist that all guns not in use be locked in steel lockers fastened with approved locks. Another thing thing would be abolition of the shoot- first legislation, and condemnation of the NRA vampires who are promoting it.

You will see me over at Political Switchboard more often, which has a great sense of community. I am beginning to question whether these big blogs can do what they are attempting with their minimal sense of community. I keep yelling at them: Engage the people!!! (But who listens to me?)

Re: Gun safety (none / 0)

there you go. No one at all, not even Ted Nugent or Ron Paul, is opposed to gun safety and keeping tots away from dangerous stuff when not supervised by a responsible adult.

There's nothing in the Second Amendment that insists on the right to keep dangerous weapons lying around loaded and not securely stored.
