Dems as a Product and a Worthy Model to Follow

There has been a lot of talk on KOS about the marketing of Democratic Candidates.  Many great suggestions have been made but they all focus on the individual candidate.  I'd like to propose that more attention be paid on the group.  Democrats in general.  Their logos, t-shirts, bumperstickers, coffee mugs, flags, socks, lapel pins, water bottles, camping gear....etc.

And I'd like to propose that we follow the Frost Cutlery model.  Yeah go ahead and laugh...get it out of your system...now let me explain:

The money that could be gathered in by a dedicated 24 hour website just for merchandise related to Democrats and politics in general is mind-boggling.  It would need to be a competent team with lots of supplies, a tv show that would run at odd times in ALL markets and tie in with the web site.  The TV show hosts should be fun and informative.  The show would have featured bloggers, politicians and media figures along with the merchandise.

Licensing issues would have to be worked out of course and I'd suggest a brand new line of Dem Gear just for this venture.  Contests could be run for new artwork, posters etc.

Is there any law preventing such a network from existing?

Probably the only way to find out if this is legal or not would be to try it, and see if somebody gets busted! The products would have to be damn good. As far as the democrats themselves are concerned, there might be a little quality problem. How liberal is Hillary Clinton? Not very. How liberal is Ned Lamont? Who the hell knows?

You could sell me on a thousand like Ted Kennedy.

"Yeah go ahead and laugh"

Not at all.  I think this is a worthy idea.  I have said for a long time Dems think like policy wonks and Repubs think like marketers.  I love policy but if don't win you can't enact it.  Bob Halderman, Nixon's Chief of Staff, was an ad agency guy.  Roger Ailes, Bush I's media consultant, was a TV producer.  See a pattern???

Kos had a piece yesterday about Eliot Spitzer's ads and said that one of the reasons they are so good is they are done by Madison Ave rather than a political consultant.

You are on to something here.

Thanks guys now if we can get someone with money to listen.

I can develop the concept a little more and repost.
